Snorkeling with Sea Turtles Around Mnemba Island
The trip to Mnemba Island is, just in my opinion, really special. It’s famed as an super premium spot to do snorkeling, so, that really lets you get close with sea turtles. These little guys, they live in the clear waters around this very private island. To be clear, Mnemba Island itself, is that sort of luxury resort, and usually very exclusive, but luckily the surrounding waters? Those are open for guided snorkeling trips. It could be, that, the earlier you show up for the boat trip, the fewer boats and the bigger chance that the water is much clearer.
So, what can you maybe expect? After you get to the place, you’re probably going to see an azure ocean and, apparently, that vibrant coral reefs stretch below you. Sea turtles? They are really calm, they are used to swimmers, meaning that they will drift gracefully, and this can make for absolutely brilliant photo opportunities. Beyond sea turtles, anyway, there is this wide array of sea life on display, really showing off the stunning aquatic environment. A few tips I picked up – apparently using reef-safe sunscreen is basically crucial. It will help protect the delicate coral from chemicals. It can also pay to bring an underwater camera if that sounds like you. It will help capture these experiences so you can look back on them for years. Also be aware of other people, so respect the wildlife: keep a sensible distance to help avoid causing disturbance. So too it’s almost easy to damage the wildlife by being too intrusive.
Planning Your Snorkeling Trip to Mnemba
Arranging a trip to Mnemba Island usually requires booking through a reputable tour operator. There seem to be loads of tour operators in Zanzibar that offer these excursions. So, too it’s almost useful to maybe research and compare reviews before deciding. Very, very early morning trips tend to be pretty good for avoiding crowds, to make it a bit more of a special experience. Plus the sea is quite often very calm in the mornings, and makes it better for anyone that isn’t a super confident swimmer, in that case it makes the snorkeling conditions nice, which is usually really quite appreciated by everyone.
The cost of the trip might be dependent on things such as what’s included and, anyway, which operator you choose. Some may only provide the boat and snorkeling gear. Very, very different to tours which cover lunch and extra stops. It really all is dependent on which of these that you would like. What’s more, snorkeling equipment should be, for the most part, included. Having said that, so too it’s almost a good idea to just check that everything is the proper size when you book and make sure they give you a flotation device just in case you aren’t so happy in the water.
Meeting the Monkeys of Jozani Forest
Anyway, Jozani Forest is just a fantastic location if you fancy doing some sight seeing. It is home to the super unique Red Colobus monkeys. This forest provides more or less a cool change from Zanzibar’s coast, by letting you have a deeper insight into local biodiversity. These monkeys that hang out in Jozani Forest are something quite interesting. Red Colobus monkeys exist exclusively in Zanzibar and can only be located within this region. That means a trip to the Jozani forest lets you witness these lovely animals living free in the wild. It could be the most special thing of all. As a matter of fact they aren’t really threatened by the visitors, you might see them leaping throughout the trees, and sometimes walking directly across your path.

What to Expect in Jozani Forest
On top of the super amazing Red Colobus monkeys, the forest could be home to loads of different species, and so it makes it great for those that enjoy nature and want to maybe see it close up. Your average guided tour usually includes walking throughout the mangroves too. The guide will give an introduction to plant life of the area, the wildlife you see, and why this forest is quite important for the island.
The walks are usually pretty flat. It is often a pretty easy route for pretty much any fitness level. What’s more, I think you should put on some comfy shoes and also some very lightweight clothes. Apparently insect repellent might be a good idea. It should also protect against any mosquitoes you may encounter. As a matter of fact make sure you listen carefully to what your guides say – they are usually filled with the brim with great information.
Supporting Local Conservation Through Tourism
Anyway, visits to locations such as Jozani Forest, can help local conservation in practice. The tourism supports projects in the area. In that case you could even learn about these as well. Some may not like the idea of the concept of animal tourism. However, without visitors it’s questionable how there is usually funding for those efforts. Respect for the environment is usually what needs promoting, especially to those that get involved.
Combining Both Trips: A Day of Adventure
A trip I went on saw doing a guided snorkeling session in the morning, and seeing the monkeys in the afternoon. Combining them together created one truly fantastic day, offering up the greatest experience on sea and land. Basically a packed lunch for during this trip will prevent you from being hungry. In that case bring any extra snacks if you like, in case you’re not keen on some local cuisines. I feel this offers something for many, making it a totally awesome experience for anybody of pretty much every age. Plus, you get to do super cool activities that people usually travel from across the world to do. Make it something that you could remember.
